The invention of the Cinématographe Lumière: the cinema is born
On 28th November 1895, the Lumière brothers presented the Salon Indien in the basement of the Grand Café in Paris. It was the first public screening of a film to a paying audience with a device that they had invented: the cinematograph. The audience came out astonished and surprised. The projections were hugely successful right from the first session and from that moment on they spread all over the world with remarkable speed.
