Abstract The hidden face of the Big Apple, based on the study of the case of Jacob A. Riis (also applicable to other contemporary amateur photographers such as Jack London or Herman Drawe), presents the way in which the magic lantern talks of the late nineteenth century and the beginning of the 20th century invited the virtualization of poverty, adopting a type of live show whose documentary function would later be taken up by the moving image. Early cinema as well as the contemporary cinema, with the intention of reconstructing pre-existing spaces and situations, would restore the original intense questioning effect of Riis's images, turning some of his slides into subjective shots that offer immersive displacements towards the underworld. |
