A very curious amateur film device, since instead of using celluloid films, it used eighteen glass plates measuring 6.5 x 9 cm. Eighty-four frames (seven frames wide by twelve in height) were fixed on each plate, equivalent to about fifty metres of film. Using this glass plate system, instead of the traditional film, was due to the need to avoid the use of celluloid films of the time, which were highly flammable and, therefore, very dangerous for non-professional family use. The Olikos could also perform the role of a projector. It was patented in 1911 by Henri Sironi and marketed from 1913 by the Société des Appareils Olikos, by Isidore Ullman and Léon Meerens.
