Engraving showing a travelling lanternist, accompanied by his assistant with a Barbarie organ, conducting a session in a private house. Street lanternists of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries could both stage their shows in public venues and in private settings, expressly leased to make a screening for a small and select number of spectators of the well-to-do class of society.
