Lumière Filmmakers: Documenting our surroundings

Secondary school

We’ll explore and experiment with the documentary genre through the work of the Lumière brothers, the pioneers of documentary filmmaking

We propose an activity based on the "Lumière minute" experience, a documentary exercise created by the educational team of the Cinémathèque Française and developed in Catalonia by the Cinema en Curs team. This exercise draws inspiration from the documentary visits of the Lumière brothers.

At the Museum of Cinema, we have adapted this experience with the aim of enabling students to create their own documentary views of the city of Girona. These views will be inspired by the first films in history, which were filmed using the device invented by the Lumière brothers, the Cinématographe. This invention allowed them to capture the everyday life of their time. The films they created were one-shot, approximately one-minute-long films, filmed with a fixed camera.

Students will also have the opportunity to see one of the few remaining examples of the Lumière Cinématographe at the museum.

The various activities students will undertake during this session will help them understand the fundamentals of cinematic language and will foster values such as the importance of teamwork to achieve successful results, as well as enhancing their observational skills and creativity.

Price

9 EUR per student (groups of 19 students or more) / 180 EUR per group (groups of fewer than 19 students).
