Magic lantern: from image to the show

Activity where students will learn about and make a magic lantern performance

This proposal will introduce children to the fascinating world of audiovisual performances that contributed to the emergence of cinema, focusing especially on the wonderful spectacle of the magic lantern.

In the first part, during the guided tour of the museum's permanent exhibition, students will discover the devices and inventions that led to the invention of cinema. In the second part, in the workshop, the children will become lanternists and create and perform a story with a magic lantern.

Objectives

- Learn and understand how the magic lantern works, its various types, and the wide use it had since its invention.

- Observe the performances made with the magic lantern from an artistic, aesthetic, and social perspective.

- Appreciate the importance of the magic lantern show and technique as a direct precursor to cinematic projection.

- Create and perform a magic lantern show.

- Discover the concepts and elements that led to the invention of cinema.

- Strengthen teamwork and individual effort to achieve a successful result.

- Foster students' creativity and imagination.

- Develop a respectful attitude toward cultural heritage and different ways of seeing and understanding the world.

Duration

3 hours (guided museum tour and magic lantern workshop).

Price

9 EUR per student (groups of 19 students or more) / 180 EUR per group (groups of fewer than 19 students).

Observations

Maximum group size of 26 students.
