The Pathé Renforcé was a popular 35 mm projector model manufactured by Pierre Victor Continsouza's workshop for Pathé from 1905 onwards. Inspired by Lumière projectors, the first Pathé Renforcé model had bronze columns and an in sight malt cross. From 1908, the malt cross was encapsulated with an oil bath inside a casing. Patented by Continsouza, the four-pronged maltese cross system was a mechanism for intermittent drag of the film, which became the most widely used in film projection devices. The Pathé Renforcé projector had the shutter located in front of the lens and was operated by a crank, but with the possibility of incorporating an electric motor. It had considerable success around the world, between 1905 and 1930. During the 1930s, it continued to be manufactured by Gaumont-Franco-Film-Aubert, which had taken over the Continsouza workshops.
