The mutoscope is a viewer of peep show-style films, which was first manufactured by the American company American Mutoscope and Biograph Co., and stands out for being one of the first media with which films were shown. Beginning in the 1920s, the American Mutoscope and Biograph Co. stopped exploiting the mutoscope. Viewers were no longer attracted to moving images that could be seen inside mutoscopes after inserting a coin. The competition of cinemas was definitive and henceforth the company would be engaged only in the production and distribution of films for the big screen. However, New York businessman William Rabkin was authorised to use the mutoscope patent and in 1925 created the International Mutoscope Reel Co., with the intention of relaunching its use in slot machine amusement arcades. He produced new reels with new films and manufactured new models of mutoscopes.
