E. Hartmann-Bahon was a music box factory in Sainte Croix, Switzerland, which made this model, fitted with a praxinoscope on top and a music box in the bottom part. The praxinoscope rotated at the same time as the cylinder that played the music rotated, since the rotation mechanism of both devices was connected. The driving force was a winding mechanism, which was activated by inserting a coin through a slot located on the right side. This object was one of the first attempts to combine moving image and sound in the same device, using the same operating mechanism. Since it was coin-operated, we can infer that it was built to be displayed in public places or spaces, where people could pay to satisfy their curiosity of seeing a continuously moving drawing accompanied by the sound of a music box.
