Another of the optical toys derived from Émile Reynaud's praxinoscope is this one, which he called toupie pantoches, and which he patented in 1879. This is a very simple device; it is shaped like a pyramid with mirrors on all four sides and a handle at the bottom. The strips with the images are replaced by cardboard disks, where there are four drawings that break down a movement. This disk was placed upside down on top of the pyramid, which was rotated. The moving image was observed through the mirrors. The toupie fantoches is a very rare object; only two original copies are known in the world, one of which is the one in the Museum of Cinema. Reynaud only published a series of ten picture discs for the toupie pantoches.
