Praxinoscope

Manufacturer Émile Reynaud
Name Praxinoscope
Place París (France)
Date after 1877
Register 992

The praxinoscope was patented by Frenchman Émile Reynaud in 1877. This optical toy, which animated a drawn sequence of movement, was a refinement of the zoetrope. The grooves of the drum in the zoetrope were replaced by twelve small mirrors located inside the rotating cylinder. Each of these mirrors reflected an image of the twelve on the strip of paper placed inside the cylinder. The result gave a sense of less sudden movement, more leisurely and with more brightness than the zoetrope. A chandelier and the screen, at the top of the device, decorated the object and made it possible to see the animation in a situation with little light. This toy won an Honourable Mention at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878 and was a notable commercial success, which encouraged Reynaud to create new optical toys derived from the praxinoscope in the following years.
