This device was an optical toy that made it possible to create various visual effects. The base is a high-speed rotating plate on which is placed a disk that also rotates. Observing this rotating disk with a manual shutter, which is provided with the toy itself, you can see the strobe effect, that is to say we see an object that is spinning as if it were stationary or spinning very slowly. In general, the invention of the stroboscope is attributed to the Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau, almost in parallel with the creation of the phenakistoscope. La Ravissante also allows you to create the visual effect of the thaumatrope, by placing a disk with two complementary images, one on each side, on the vertical axis of the spinning top.
