Engraved by Charles Baude, it is a reproduction of the painting by Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret. This engraving was published in 1879 in supplement no.1892 of the French magazine L'Illustration. It shows two newly-weds posing in a photographer's studio for a portrait surrounded by their loved ones. The artist was inspired by the study of a real workshop located on the avenue des Ternes in Paris. In the early days of photography, artificial lighting systems were insufficient to adequately illuminate an indoor scene. Because of this, many of these photographers' studios had glass ceilings to take advantage of natural light to illuminate the scene that needed to be portrayed, as can be seen in this engraving.
