Calotype (negative)

Author Calvert Richard Jones
Title "Study of a Facade, Place Royale, Brussels"
Date ca. 1850
Register 03329

Calotype made by the Reverend Calvert Richard Jones, who learned this photographic procedure directly from its English inventor, William Henry Fox Talbot, in 1846. Draughtsman and painter of seascapes, Jones was a daguerreotypist before turning to the calotype. He developed a prolific photographic career, especially from his travels in the Mediterranean. His work includes seascapes and portraits of local men and women at work and leisure, as well as landscapes of Italy and France. After 1856, Jones seems to have given up photography, although he continued to paint.
