Newton’s Prism

Manufacturer Unknown
Date ca. 1850
Register 00874

Devices designed by Isaac Newton to experiment with the decomposition of white light from the colours of the visible spectrum. Isaac Newton discovered in 1666 that white light can be divided into the seven colours components by passing a ray of sunlight through a glass prism and, in this way, obtain the visible spectrum of sunlight. Newton's disc creates the inverse experiment, that is, with the sum of the decomposed colours it creates the colour white.
