Glass slide for a magic lantern in photographic format. The first photographs that appeared after 1839 were made on opaque materials, which did not allow them to be projected by transparency. The first photographs on glass slidess suitable for projection with a magic lantern date back to 1849. They were marketed by the Americans Wilhelm and Friedrich Lagenheim, with a procedure they called hyalopip. In 1851 they adopted a new procedure to create photographic slidess: wet collodion, which provided a much higher quality image. During the 1860s and 1870s, the projection of photographs in magic lantern shows became increasingly common. When it came to showing the reality, quality and detail of photographic images, even if they were in black and white, they far exceeded the hand-crafted drawings of the first slidess for magic lantern. From 1880, the production of photographic slidess for magic lanterns was in the millions and had very varied themes, as evidenced by the voluminous catalogues of specialised companies, which consist of thousands of different titles.
