Magic lantern

Manufacturer The Henderson Ames Co.
Place Kalamazoo, Michigan (EEUU)
Date circa 1905
Register 07352

Device for projecting images placed on a spinning disc. Each disc contains ten small crystals with the images, which are mounted on the end of a circular metal structure, which is why it is called a "peacock" lantern, because the shape is reminiscent of the unfolded tail of this bird. This lantern was manufactured by the American company The Henderson Ames Company in the early twentieth century, and most likely copied an earlier, more luxurious lantern model patented in 1888 by another American company, Pettibone Mfg Co. Lanterns of this kind were mainly used for small-scale public projections for groups, associations or schools and colleges. The Henderson Ames Company, founded in 1866, was involved above all in making uniforms, gift objects, ceremonial swords, flags and emblems for fraternities, secret societies, associations, police forces, fire brigades, rail workers and even the US army.
