Usually magic lanterns for domestic use were sold in boxes made of solid cardboard or wood, very well decorated, and often with beautiful drawings that illustrated the device. Inside these boxes, apart from the magic lantern, there could be one or two sets of glass slidess and also some other accessories. Most often the instructions for use were glued to the inside of the lid. Founded in 1866, the Ernst Plank company was the second most important manufacturer of magic lanterns in Nuremberg, after Gebrüder Bing. In addition to lanterns, it also manufactured all kinds of tin-slides boats and steam trains. The company survived World War I, but production of magic lanterns gradually ceased in the 1920s. In 1930 the factory was sold to Hans and Fritz Schaller, who specialised in home film equipment.
