Glass slide for magic lantern of the type Ross’s Wheel of Life, made by Pumphrey Brothers, an English company that specialised in manufacturing magic lanterns and glass slides. Based on Plateau's phenakistiscope, the Lantern Wheel of Life is a slide of machined glass for projection with the magic lantern of animated drawings, using the persistence of vision principle. Invented by Thomas Ross in 1871, it consisted of two discs, one of which was made of metal with a groove and acted as a shutter. The other disc was transparent and contained the painted silhouettes of thirteen images, depicting the various phases of a movement. The two discs were placed on the same shaft and through a system of cords, gears and a handle, they rotated in opposite directions, producing the illusion of the moving image on the screen when projected with a magic lantern. Beginning in the 1870s, many companies manufactured and sold this device.
