Magic lantern slides for professional phantasmagoria shows. Most slides for this type of show depicted frightening themes or characters: ghosts, monsters, demons, skeletons, skulls, witches, tombs, etc. There were also portraits of well-known figures, especially from the French Revolution, such as Napoleon or Robespierre. All these images were designed to be projected using phantasmagoria techniques, that is, with the lantern hidden behind the screen to try to convince the viewer of a supernatural presence. In order to give more impact and veracity to the projected images, they were often animated by various mechanisms, and were also painted on a black background, in order to eliminate superfluous light and so that only the subject painted on the glass slide appeared illuminated on the screen.
