Johann Christoph Sturm, professor of mathematics and oriental languages at the University of Altdorf (Germany), described in this work the operation of the magic lantern and proposed several improvements in its construction, which made it smaller, more portable and manageable. He accompanied this description with the illustration of a magic lantern, with a horizontal cylindrical body, on a flared foot and with a chimney with a hat, which many consider the first published image of a fully functional magic lantern. From then on, many magic lanterns were manufactured following Sturm's instructions. In this book we also find the first printed graphic representation of a glass slide for a magic lantern, with the image of the head of the god Bacchus, fat and smiling, and crowned with grapes and vine leaves.
