As the length of the films increased, the Cinématographe Lumière and the 1897 projector posed a problem with their film carriers: they were too small. Thus in 1903, Jules Carpentier and Louis Lumière designed the défileur, a kind of additional accessory for the projector, which allowed the passage of reels of up to five hundred metres of film. It was separate from the projector and adapted to it without the need for any modification. The défileur was attached to the projection trestle. This base supported the arm holding the upper reel, the gears through which the film moved, and the lower reel that collected the projected film. Toothed drums and rollers attached to the arm on horizontal axes pulled the film from the top reel to the bottom, passing through the projector. A crank, placed to the right of the défileur, operated this entire system by means of a chain with adjustable tension, which was connected to the wheels of the mechanism.
