This course delves into the cinema of Ingmar Bergman, one of the most influential filmmakers of the twentieth century. Through close analysis of key works, participants will explore the recurring themes in his filmography: the human face as a site of psychological revelation, the intensity of emotional and existential crisis, silence and unspoken communication between characters, and the late reflections on mortality, memory and relationships that run through his final films. From his early youthful dramas to the testamentary works that close his career, the course will trace how Bergman refined a distinctive cinematic language marked by introspection and the search for characters' inner truth. Combining screenings, contextual explanations and critical discussion, the course traces Bergman's evolution as an artist and situates his work within the broader landscape of European cinema.
