Although Luis Buñuel's name is closely linked to Surrealism, his cinema went beyond the basic tenets of this artistic and transgressive movement created after World War I and led by André Breton. More than just surrealist, his work is best described as Buñuelian, conveying a unique vision of reality in his avant-garde films made in France in the late 1920s (Un chien andalou, L'âge d'or), his prolific Mexican period (Los olvidados, The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz, The Exterminating Angel), and his final French period (Belle de jour, The Phantom of Liberty), without forgetting his two Spanish productions, Las Hurdes: Land Without Bread and Viridiana.

This course will analyze his most representative films and examine his recurring themes and distinctive style-cruel, ironic, and fetishistic. Buñuel developed this unique voice even under the precarious conditions of 1950s Mexican cinema, later refining it within the French film industry, where he brought his cynical fantasies to life with stars like Jeanne Moreau, Catherine Deneuve, and Michel Piccoli. His narrative puzzles even earned him the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.
