Five sequences to explain a masterpiece is the starting point for this series of guided screenings. The speakers choose a film they regard as special and select five moments from the film. These excerpts are screened and analysed during the session. The cycle, merging the film forum and a talk, provides a chance to examine key works in the history of cinema and analyse them with the calm and detail they deserve.

In this session, the journalist Enric Calpena comments on El verdugo by Luis García Berlanga (Spain, 1963), 90 minutes.

José Luis, an undertaker's employee, plans to emigrate to Germany to become a skilled mechanic. His girlfriend is the daughter of Amadeo, a professional executioner. When Amadeo catches them in an intimate situation, he forces them to get married. Faced with the newlyweds' urgent financial difficulties, Amadeo, who is about to retire, tries to persuade José Luis to apply for the job he will be leaving, which would also grant him a housing benefit. José Luis eventually agrees to his father-in-law's proposal, convinced that he will never have to carry out such a disgraceful profession.
